Their scientific work is definitely not "lost", but they surely lived some time as refugees... It's also commonly agreed upon that the two specific scientists I mentioned deserved winning the Nobel Prize, but they never got it...
I am reminded of the story of bacteriophages. The West focused on antibiotics, but the Soviets focused on phage treatments.
Unfortunately, the senior phage scientists in the USSR somehow offended Stalin, so he had them all executed. We lost all that expertise and research, which would have been invaluable to mankind, particularly now that we are observing the limits and drawbacks of antibiotics.

This sounds like an interesting book. It is particularly relevant since in the West we are currently facing an ideology that is no less potentially destructive than Nazi-ism or Communism; Wokism.
Wokism has a lot of similarities to these other ideologies. Wokism is fundamentally antisemitic, as has recently become more clear. If you impose "equity" by force, fields in which Jews congregate like many parts of the sciences and mathematics will be decimated. This will have the exact same effect as programs under Nazi-ism and Communism.
To the woke, the only thing worse than a male is a white male, and the only thing worse than a white male is a Jewish white male, and the only thing worse than a Jewish white male is a heterosexual Jewish white male. The same is probably true of the "white adjacents" like Asians. This would be amusing, except it is deadly serious.
Maybe we are starting to wake up to the threat. I sure hope so.
The petty bureaucrats who are in control of most of our institutions and organizations and professions are desperate to carry out these ridiculous plans. We better stand up and resist.

The book mentions some in passing. Clary's idea was to write about less famous ones, those who were truly lost.
The soviets were a filthy dictatorship that oppressed and terrorized numerous nations and countless millions of people.
