Again on the sticky point of whether protesting Israel's existence and the war in Gaza is anti-semitism, as opposed to simply a policy stance:
The major driver of anti-Zionism of the Leftist variety is not hostility to Jews, but hostility to The Western Tradition. This is also hostility to "Whites" as they've come to be thought of-- not hostility to Caucasoids, which would include Latin Americans and Arabs, but to Europeans, Americans, Israelis, Canadians, and Australians (really, of any race, including what some African villagers called "Black White Men"). The idea is that Israel is a colony of the evil Europeans. This ties in with the older, non-religious anti-semitism of the Jews as rich bankers and merchants acting as parasites on the honest peasants and proletariat. It expands the guilty ethnicity, though, to include WASPS, British, French, Germans, etc.
You have raised a very interesting point. which i intentionally dodged by just using ADL's data. Most leftist antisemitism doesn't hate Jews on principle, just Jews who live in Israel where they shouldn't along with Jews who support Israel, Jews who benefit from capitalism without denouncing it, and so on. A significant share of far-left Jews support that, and while this is not a new phenomenon it is now more prominent in ADL data than white supremacist attacks on Jews. It has also helps mainstream calumnies against Israel by absolving moral guilt -- reflect in Nazi symbolism becoming more prevalent now on left than right. What we call antisemitism has partially morphed into a wedge for anti-Westernism, with Israel as the nominal focus rather than Jews per se. One of the many ironies is that historically one of the main calumnies against Jews is that they weren't capable of running a state just undermining others'.
"...Most leftist antisemitism doesn't hate Jews on principle, just Jews who live in Israel...."
Sounds like you're assuming that Jews aren't antisemitic. Many are, both in principle as well as more personally self-hating. I know plenty self-hating Jews who feel--or think they should feel--guilty about being, well, Jewish. They've drunk much too much of the wrong flavor Kool-Aid.
Believe me: they hate Jews, especially themselves. And they generalize the "feelings" to encompass the rest of Jewry.
Less assumption on my part than ignorance and confusion, along with claims that their anti-Israel sentiment is actually a higher love. Here's a specific example. Alabama senator Katie Britt, who reflects the strong Christian Zionist leanings in the state, condemned the ADL-reported upsurge in antisemitic attacks. This triggered an op-ed in al.com by 4 UofA professors, describing themselves as morally superior "Jews of conscience" and claiming that (a) the "right wing" ADL falsely describes anti-Israel attacks as antisemitic, (b) Israel is committing genocide, (c) the most virulent antisemitism comes from the far right and (d) the R party has embraced it. Fyi, as soon as this was forwarded to me, I wrote a response focusing mainly on (d), which is mathematically ridiculous, since according to the Hamas-run Gaza Ministry of Health, the death toll since Oct 7 is 2.3% and also since an Israel that aimed for genocide could have done so far quicker and cheaper. I sent my response to both the outlet and the profs but by odd coincidence their electronic ink seems to have run dry.
Also, the ADL is simply another wing of the Democratic Party, along with the MSM and upscale academia. And the first rule for anyone under the liberal tent is: No enemies to the Left.
I remember last year during the anti-Israel protests some article about Trump being a Nazi fascist posted by CNN or NBC, and as I used to work at Rock Center, I could tell that while this was being written, there were protests menacing Jews and burning Israeli flags a few blocks away—thus the mainstream journalist was waxing hysterical about some supposed neo-Nazis out in the hinterlands while there were real live Jew haters right under their nose.
The ADL/NPR/NYT craft and sell narratives, not truth or facts or reality. And the narrative for them is that all bigots are on the other team. Liberals have too much of their self-image founded on the idea of them being the tolerant, compassionate people, they will never face the haters in their own coalition, as it would require too much confrontation, too much self-analyis and too much contradicting sacred dogma.
They will find a way to blame our current upsurge of anti-Semitism on Trump and MAGA, just as they're blaming the ICE riots on Trump. There's no other way for them to process information or conceive of the world. Tribalism ultimately rots every brain.
Brilliant article. As a grassroots organizer who sat face to face with DSA/SJP/CAIR in city halls in CA we never once in the past two years had issue with right wing antisemitism. In fact, we joked that we wondered if the KKK showed up the Mayor and Council would be as kind to them as they were to the fully masked pro-Palestinian agitators whom they put red carpet down for and ignoring all decorum, rules etc. Thank you for exposing the truth.
ah, masking. Outlawed in most Southern states in the 1950s (Jewish lawyers helped raft some legislation) to help curb the KKK. Hard to justify in a democracy--if you can preemptively mask to prevent unjust punishment for constitutionally protected speech, why can't you preemptively flash a loaded shotgun to prevent unjust assassination? If you can enlist 10,000 robots to protest on your behalf, are you entitled to mask them as humans so that no one can tell?
If the robots claimed everyone else was the oppressor and they were the oppressed robots they would be welcomed in CA city halls and be given rights that are supposed to have time, place and manner limitations. OPPRESSION somehow matters more than anything else, oppressed robots, oppressed zombies, you name it would get red carpet right now. Sad state of affairs.
I share your indignation but try to temper it through Marxist analysis, which roots ideology in class interests. Many local authorities have no directly productive skills, not even in delivering public services, and thrive only by managing the resentments they fan.
I fully agree but sadly the left that you spoke of in your powerful prose is aware of the local authorities' delinquencies and are utilizing them by 1. demanding subnationalism (this is a global movement to make city halls the UN and I have the anti-Israel toolkits from all over the globe to prove it) and 2. by getting themselves elected into said positions of power to further propagate anti-Israel hate. There is a master plan at play globally in our municipalities. You hinted at it in your work. We need more research in it stat as none of the regular legacy orgs will touch it and are choosing, as you showed in your piece, to look the other way.
It is widely understood that the ADL is Democrat Party adjacent. It is run by Democrat Party operatives. So it produces only Democrat Party propaganda. It is not supportive of Jews. It is supportive of Democrats and their fellow leftists.
One stick point addressed in this substack is whether protesting Israel's existence and the war in Gaza is anti-semitism, as opposed to simply a policy stance. One analogy that is imperfect but that I have found helpful is to the accusations that Jews poisoned wells in the 1300's and caused the Black Death. https://www.pennpress.org/9780812253610/poisoned-wells/ . We call that anti-semitism. But should we really say it isn't anti-semitism, hostility to Jews, but rather is hostility to people who poison wells?
Great expose of political bias. "[ADL] chases mice out of the big rooms of antisemitism while tiptoeing around the elephants."
Indeed, present-day antisemitism is predominantly left-wing affair, fueled by the progressive ideology.

I think you just made my point.

😂 Mr. Pot meet Mr. Kettle. Your essay on Nick Fuentes was how long??
Important read. Thank you for writing it
Great work!

Whoops-- great article, but a large part is repeated by accident. It's worth reading twice, but from the top again, not as a doubled text!

There is an evident nonhuman nature of HAMAS and many other "propalestinian" organizations.
