Academia needs harsh reform. Much of the rot starts there.

A retired Canadian professor of friend of mine who grew up in Ottawa, child of diplomat from the Canadian foreign service, commented that Trudeau's buffoonish nature placed some limits on his ability to cause trouble. Carney is much more dangerous because he comes across as a serious leader who sadly is likely to be more effective in imposing the dangerous policies of the Liberal Party.

Very well said. In addition to the author's recommendation, saving civilization also requires men and women of good conscience to actively stand up and combat bad policies whether they are inspired by the anti-Western efforts of DEI advocates to those of feminist-dominated professional "academic societies" to make the world safe for and advance women in science by removing the right to due process and the need for evidence in how the scientific community governs interactions between its members. Claiming you are "too busy" or just want to focus on your research is no different than the neighbors of Auschwitz and Dachau who claimed they had no idea what was going on behind the camps walls.

Dear Mark,

Plants have a flowering phase and a vegetative phase. Some in the flowering phase may not be able to return to vegetative growth and develop roots. Others, such as snapdragons, may. Cut flowers that have nodes, from which roots originate, have a better chance of producing roots compared with cut flowers that do not have nodes.

Here is a video of rooting roses that shows you the nodes.

Synthetic rooting hormone enhances the chance of developing roots.

It is chemical is produced commercially and contains indole-3-butyric acid (IBA,) an artificial version of the natural plant hormone auxin. Naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) is another synthetic rooting hormone that slows rotting while stimulating root growth.

Rooting hormone is easily available from Amazon.

Is Will Herberg right that Western Civilization like a cut flower that will wither and die?

Maybe, but as long as there are botanists, regeneration is possible.

thanks,

Eloquent and elegant. If Canada only had a larger Jewish population, then they could of course be blamed for the country's ills, in at least some of the provinces. For now, respectfully suggest setting up as a concierge/MDVIP practice in the wealthiest parts of Texas or Florida. Perhaps next century the USA and Canada can become federated in mutual respect.

I swing between despair and optimism. I've seen quite a few writers argue that a big part of the problem is that we in the West are too comfortable. Nothing alike a true existential threat to bring us together and value what we have. There was a wonderful essay in The Free Press recently arguing that what happened on Flight 93 on September 11, 2001, was the purest form of democracy. The passengers learned from phone calls what had happened with the other jets. They felt the plane turn back toward Washington, so they knew their fate was similar. They actually took a vote on what to do, and waited until the airplane was over a relatively unpopulated area, then stormed the cockpit. They knew they might die, but they were willing to make the attempt to save, if not themselves, then others. Human nature seems to require crisis, and I think we are at our best when faced with one. The problem is, if there isn't one, some people seem to need to invent one. How often have we heard the term "existential crisis" applied to various social concerns, when in fact they are nothing of the sort? The fact that most people don't buy into this is a hopeful sign. Someday the silent majority may rise again.

A very sound and valid observation. Sadly...this is one wish we may get once Trump is out of office.

I blame wokeism and feminism for the destruction of our western society. One of the main goals of feminism, besides never-ending misandry, is the destruction of the family structure that helped build, support and maintain democracy. Woke-ism is the destruction of western society based on the delusion of doing injustice to just about everybody (except men of course). Implementing sexism, bigotry and discrimination (ex. DEI) in the mistaken, hypocritical belief of fighting it.

Western society is DONE!

Reality is not an image on a screen. Reality is real people doing real things. Things that count.

I don't know, you're a litte vague. Are the Trump administration's jack-booted thugs destroying or preserving? I got a feeling you think they're preserving & those courageous protestors in Minneapolis were destroying. Which is 100% wrong.

Sadredin Moosavi's avatar

As a resident of Minnesota who has seen the actions of the protesters first hand in my own town and city council meeting, I am 100% on the side of ICE and the Trump administration against the fascist "protesters". Let us call these "courageous" people what they are....progressive brown shirts no different that the thugs used by the NAZIS in Germany and Mussolini's supporters in Italy to destroy their own societies.

Jack Toner's avatar

Well you sure sound like a Nazi.

Sadredin Moosavi's avatar

How so? In my town these "protesters" assaulted ICE officers, rammed their car less than a mile from my house, defaced the beautiful brand new stone walls of small businesses that have nothing to do with ICE with graffiti, and attempted to bully city council members and residents at multiple city council meetings with the threats of violence requiring police to provide security. In Minneapolis protesters have assaulted journalists and citizens, established and enforced check points on public roads against all users including preventing citizens from entering their own neighborhoods, interrupted church services injuring attendees and frightening children, harassed government employees and their families for doing their jobs, attacked hotels restaurants and other businesses for daring to do legal business with the government, etc. Sorry...but those are the actions of fascists, especially when they are aided and abetted by government officials like Governor Tim Walz, Lt Governor Peggy Flanagan and MPLS Mayor Jacob Frey. It should be noted that Frey incited a riot against Trump supporters when he had a rally at the Target Center in 2019 (long before ICE was doing anything) with elected state and city Democrat officials taking part in the violent attacks on law enforcement, vendors and rally attendees. Face the facts...the ICE "resistance" are antigovernment, anti American fascists in every sense of the word. If Minneapolis or Minnesota end up under martial law, it will be entirely deserved and appropriate to put an end to their conduct.

Jack Toner's avatar

Right. The folks with whistles are the fascists & those with the guns are just poor victims. Himmler couldn't have said it better.

Sadredin Moosavi's avatar

Tell me Jack...have you participated in such unlawful conduct?

Jack Toner's avatar

Oh my goodness no, I would never blow a whistle!

Sadredin Moosavi's avatar

Ask the children of Cities Church invaded by these protesters and their "whistles" whether they found the criminal threatening, inability to leave and the breaking of a parents arm during their church service their opinions of who is the fascist and who is the victim. Ask the ICE officer who sustained internal injuries after Renee Good rammed her with her car so she could "escape" from being arrested for harassing ICE Agents (an action which resulted in justifiable use of force to send her to Hell liberating her children from the lesbian relationship she had imposed on the family). Ask the reporter assaulted outside the Whipple Building by the people blowing whistles in her face while simply trying to REPORT what was occurring. Ask the officers who engaged an unlawfully armed Alex Pretti for attacking them (and which also resulted in his reassignment to the protests of Hell). Ask the 35,000 attendees of the 2019 Minneapolis Trump rally who were locked in the Target Center while a mob intending to harm them was held at bay by valiant Minneapolis police officers (the mob not only assaulted attendees leaving, they burned vendors wares, and assaulted officers including police HORSES). I was one of those attendees with my elderly neighbors. So...with all due respect Jack...the protesters are the fascists and I would gladly welcome mass incarceration of the entire lot of them along with their leaders in Antifa and the ranks of elected Democrat party officials.

You sound delusional and mentally ill. No offense, but do you know what Heterodox STEM is about?

Sadredin Moosavi's avatar

It's amazing how some people's speech can be completely divorced from reality and demonstrably observable facts. Sadly...such people retain the right to speak and vote...explaining the decline of Western Civilization!

Jack Toner's avatar

Freedom of thought? But perhaps only "approved" thought.

Thomas J. Snodgrass's avatar

No. It is generally to oppose woke ideology which threatens to destroy STEM. But you would be in favor of that, wouldn't you?

Along with the destruction of Western Civilization.

You just wandered in here to pick fights though, as a fruitcake leftist. I get it.

Thomas J. Snodgrass's avatar

I have plenty to say about this. But a bot with a nasty bias is running rampant through the comments section. It prevents anyone from commenting on this sort of material.

Thomas J. Snodgrass's avatar

You are definitely an "amateur". And I can tell that you live in not an information bubble, but an information vacuum. I could write more, but I am POSITIVE that you are immune to reality, to the truth.

We are in desperate need of reform of many of our institutions; the grade school system, the medical system, the legal system, the voting system, Congress, universities and colleges, the media, the R&D system, and so on. There are efforts afoot to do so, to one degree or another. Some are planning or instituting parallel systems to replace the current corrupted lousy systems.

Will these reforms happen in time? Many, including a couple of nincompoops in the comments, are FRANTIC for the current decay to continue. It is amazing to me, but they seem to have no idea what is going on. They will continue to vote for more and more decay, and be quite smug about it as they do it.

After all, the magic television box and other screens tell them that this is the right thing to do. So like sheep, like puppets or lemmings, that is what they do.

I might also mention that this is also Erdogan's rallying cry, as he pushes towards an Islamist totalitarian nightmare. Erdogan famously said democracy is like a streetcar and you can get off whenever you want. Erdogan used democracy as a tool to trick the populace into voting him in as a dictator.

Thomas J. Snodgrass's avatar

Everyone who knows any history knows that the founders were attempting to avoid Democracy, which had repeatedly proved toxic in Greece and other civilizations. So...
